
The book, which grew out of gospel conferences held at the Smithsonian over the past 12 years, is dedicated to Pearl Williams Jones, who passed away exactly two years ago tomorrow.

Talk about synchronicity: Starting tomorrow, the Smithsonian's Carmichael Auditorium becomes home to "We'll Understand It Better By and By," a three-day national conference on African American gospel music scholarship, the same day that the Smithsonian Institution Press unveils "We'll Understand It Better By and By: Pioneering African American Gospel Composers," edited by Bernice Johnson Reagon, a longtime curator at the National Museum of American History.
